A reflection written by: Erica Begg Year 11
Attending ACYF became something far more meaningful than just a school trip. We began the journey as classmates who didn’t really know what to expect, but somewhere between the busy days, late-night talks, shared meals, tears, and inside jokes, we quickly grew into something like a family. Being together in those moments made the whole experience feel deeper and more personal, and it shaped the way I took in everything the festival had to offer.
The Australian Catholic Youth Festival was more than just an event to attend; it felt like a chance to reset, breathe, and really pay attention to what was going on inside and around me. Walking into the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, surrounded by six thousand other young Catholics from across the country, was overwhelming in the best way. There was music, colour, prayer, profound energy, and a shared sense that everyone was hoping to experience something truly meaningful.
Throughout the festival, we attended sessions, Masses, and expos that broadened my perspective on ideas I hadn’t considered before. Some speakers shared stories about discovering and deepening their faith through challenges, prayer, and hope, and hearing their honesty encouraged me to reflect on my own life in ways I didn’t expect.
The music performances brought everyone together, not just as individuals from different schools and parishes, but as one big community living in the same beautiful, prayer-filled moment.
But the most emotional parts weren’t always the biggest or the loudest. Sometimes they were the quiet moments: praying with people I had only just met, writing down thoughts I didn’t realise I’d been carrying, or standing in a crowd and feeling genuinely connected and supported. Meeting, connecting, and sharing with so many like-minded young people reminded me just how important it is to have spaces where you can slow down and actually feel what’s happening within you, instead of pushing everything aside.
ACYF helped me realise that faith isn’t only found in grand or dramatic moments, or even only in silence. It shows up in small conversations, shared experiences, and the courage to ask real questions. I left ACYF feeling more grounded, open, and encouraged, with a clearer sense of where I am in my journey of faith and the kind of person I hope to become. For this experience, I am beyond grateful, and my heart is open wider than ever.
