Year Five

Dear Year 5 Families,
We can hardly believe we are already at the end of the year. It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming our students into Year 5, and now we are preparing to farewell them as they get ready for their final year of primary school. It has truly flown by, and we are incredibly proud of everything that our students have achieved this year.
Reading
All Year 5 classes have now finished our class novel Boy at the Back of the Class. Students were deeply engaged right through to the end and had lots to say about the powerful conclusion. Many students shared thoughtful reflections such as, “It made me feel hopeful but also sad at the same time,” and “I liked that it showed how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.” The novel prompted rich discussions about empathy, friendship and standing up for others, and it was wonderful to see students confidently sharing and justifying their opinions.
Mathematics
In maths, we have been spending time consolidating key skills and concepts to support a smooth transition into Year 6. Students have been revisiting number, problem-solving strategies and mathematical reasoning, with a focus on explaining their thinking clearly and confidently. This consolidation has helped reinforce foundations and build confidence as students prepare for the challenges of next year.
Writing
In writing, students were given the opportunity to write a personal letter to their future Year 6 teacher. In these letters, they reflected thoughtfully on their strengths, identified areas they would like to improve, and shared what they hope to achieve in Year 6. This was a valuable reflective task that encouraged goal setting and self-awareness, and many students showed maturity and honesty in their writing.
Inquiry
We have recently wrapped up our science inquiry unit on light. Throughout the unit, students explored how light works and how it impacts our everyday lives. To conclude the unit, students had the opportunity to share their learning with other classes around the school. They did a fantastic job explaining scientific ideas clearly and confidently, and it was wonderful to see their pride in sharing what they had learned.
Christmas Carols
This week, we have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the festive season with our Christmas carols performances. The students worked hard to prepare and performed with enthusiasm and confidence.
Each class did an amazing job:
5A and 5B – You Make It Feel Like Christmas
5C and 5D – A Christmas Medley
5E and 5F – Candy Cane Lane
5G and 5H – Holly Jolly Christmas
5I and 5J – Holidays
It was a joyful way to celebrate the end of a wonderful year together.
As we wrap up the year, we would like to thank our Year 5 families for your continued support. We wish all families a happy, safe and relaxing holiday break. To our students, we wish you the very best of luck as you head into your final year of primary school. We know you will continue to grow, challenge yourselves and make us proud.
Warm regards,
The Year 5 Team
