Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,

As we come to the end of the year in Year Three, I would like to reflect on what has been a rewarding and successful learning journey for our students throughout 2025. It has been a pleasure to see students grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity as learners.

This year, students engaged in a range of exciting inquiries that encouraged them to think deeply and make meaningful connections to the world around them. Highlights included our swimming program at Saltwater Swim School, where students built confidence and vital water safety skills, and our excursion to Werribee Zoo, which enriched their understanding of animals, habitats, and environmental responsibility.

Alongside these learning experiences, Year 3 students shared many moments of celebration, collaboration, and pride in their achievements, helping to build a strong and supportive community.

On behalf of the Year 3 teaching team, thank you to our families for your continued support throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of our students and look forward to celebrating the final weeks together as we prepare for the year ahead.

Year Three Assistant Principal

Reading

Over the past lessons, students developed important inquiry skills by learning how to sort and refine questions, identify patterns, and build strong investigations. They practised turning big open questions into smaller, helpful closed questions to deepen their understanding.

Students also explored how to find credible and trustworthy sources, using simple checks to decide which websites were reliable for learning about ecosystems and animals. As part of this learning, they practised taking notes and paraphrasing information in their own words, using a range of note-taking strategies to support understanding.

These learning experiences supported students in becoming thoughtful researchers, confident thinkers, and increasingly independent learners.

Writing

In Writing, students have been exploring persuasive writing. They have been using their skills to tackle topics that links to our Unit of Inquiry, e.g. pollution. Students have been researching the chemicals in our air, and the waste that harms plants, animals, and people. Through persuasive writing, students are learning how to express strong opinions, back them up with facts, and inspire others to take action.

As it is our final weeks of school, students have also been exploring their creative side, by writing Santa letters, creating Christmas crafts and even some free writing. It is wonderful to see students enjoying their love for writing right until the end of the year. The Year Threes have made so much progress in writing this year, they should all be very proud.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been strengthening their understanding of geometric transformations, including slides, flips, and turns. They have been learning how shapes can be moved in different ways while keeping their size and form. Students have also been exploring symmetry, identifying lines of symmetry in various shapes and creating their own symmetrical designs. Through hands-on tasks and visual activities, they have been applying key skills such as describing transformations, recognising patterns, and representing symmetry accurately.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been investigating how different components within an ecosystem depend on one another and the various threats these environments face. They began by exploring the biotic and abiotic elements that make up an ecosystem, then deepened their understanding of interdependence through food webs and chains, discovering how organisms rely on each other for survival. Students also examined the impact of human activities on ecosystems. To conclude the unit, they took action by creating informative posters to raise awareness about the importance of protecting ecosystems and reducing harmful impacts. Additionally, students applied their learning by designing and building their own ecosystems in Minecraft, showcasing their knowledge in a creative and engaging way.

Farewell for 2025

As we reach the conclusion of the school year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been a meaningful and successful year for our Year 3 students. Throughout 2025, it has been a pleasure to support your children as they continued to grow as learners and as members of our school community.

This year, students have taken important steps forward in their learning, demonstrating increased independence, confidence, and responsibility. They have worked hard to develop their academic skills while also strengthening their ability to collaborate, problem-solve, and show care and respect for others. We are very proud of the way our students have embraced challenges, shared their ideas, and celebrated both personal and collective achievements.

We would also like to sincerely thank our families for your ongoing partnership and support. Your communication, encouragement, and involvement have played a vital role in helping students feel confident and supported throughout the year.

As students prepare to transition into the next year level in 2026, they do so with a strong foundation and readiness for the learning ahead. We wish all Year 3 families a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to continuing this journey together in the year ahead.

Warm regards,

The Year Three Team
