Year Two

Dear Year Two Parents & Carers,
As we come to the end of a wonderful year in Year Two, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the many learning experiences, celebrations, and milestones that have enabled our students to grow as learners throughout 2025.
Throughout the year, students have made strong progress academically and socially, developing greater independence, resilience and a love of learning. They have strengthened their literacy and numeracy skills, grown in confidence when sharing their thinking, and shown pride in their achievements. It has been a pleasure to see them embrace challenges, work collaboratively and continue to develop as capable, enthusiastic learners.
Highlights
We have had many highlights throughout the year, including our excursions to Point Cook Coastal Park, Werribee Park and IMAX. These excursions were closely linked to our units of inquiry and provided students with valuable hands-on learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through exploring natural environments, historical sites and immersive visual presentations, students were able to deepen their understanding of key concepts, make real-world connections and ask meaningful questions. The excursions supported curiosity, reinforced classroom learning and helped students build a richer understanding of the world around them.
Reading
Over the course of the year, students have been immersed in the novels Charlotte’s Web and Storm Boy. Through these shared texts, students explicitly developed key reading comprehension strategies, including questioning, inferring and making connections to support deeper understanding of the texts. A range of targeted lessons focused on analysing characters, settings and events, encouraging students to think critically, justify their ideas using evidence from the text and engage in deeper thinking. These learning experiences strengthened students’ comprehension skills while also supporting rich discussions around themes such as friendship, empathy and care for the natural environment.
Units of Inquiry
Most recently, families joined us to share and celebrate the wonderful learning they explored through our last central idea. Students investigated disasters and the impact and response of communities. Students created models, projects and posters and shared their learning with families during our open afternoon.
Naplan Preparation
In March next year, students will participate in Naplan Tests for Reading, Writing, Language conventions and Numeracy. In order to prepare for this test, we strongly encourage students to continue their reading throughout the summer break, as regular reading helps to maintain and further develop important literacy skills. Point Cook has a wonderful public library where students can freely borrow a wide range of books suited to different interests and reading levels. Visiting the library and choosing books they enjoy can keep students connected to reading and provide opportunities for learning and enjoyment over the holidays.
Mini Olympics
The Year 2 students had fun at Brookedale Oval participating in our mini olympics. We had rotations of activities such as; egg and spoon race, 3 legged race, sack race, hoops and many many more.
Year Two Christmas Carols
Teachers and students spent a great deal of time preparing for their Christmas Carols performance. The experience was fun and engaging for students, and it was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of a successful year together. Students enjoyed learning and performing the songs, and the concert provided an opportunity to share their hard work with families and the school community. It was a joyful celebration that highlighted students’ enthusiasm, teamwork and sense of pride.
Thank You
The Year Two Team would like to extend our sincere gratitude to parents and families for your ongoing support throughout the year. Your partnership and encouragement have played an important role in supporting students’ learning and wellbeing. We hope that all students have had a positive and enjoyable experience as a Year Two student at Saltwater and that they feel proud of their achievements and growth this year.
We wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. Thank you for being part of our school community.
