Focus on Learning

Stage 3
Numeracy
In Mathematics, we have recently been focusing on measuring volume of 3-dimensional spaces of rectangular prisms, using cm3 and m3. Hands on activities for measuring volume, are a great way for students' to visually understand the measuring process, as well as helping them retain the learning more, by putting their skills into practice. In the images below, we were working in three different groups with different measuring tools (cubic centimetre blocks and Base ten MAB blocks), to form as many different rectangular prisms as they could. The challenge was, they had to use the same number of blocks each time but also have a different length, width and height each time. This activity supported the students understanding on how even though objects may be in a different shape, they can still have the same volume.
Creative Arts
In Creative Arts this term, we have been focusing on Dance. Over the past couple of weeks, we have been working in groups to form different dances with a beginning, middle and end based on their chosen narrative. Some narratives the groups have chosen are 'A little bird learns to fly', 'Never give up', 'WWII' and 'Ballerinas learn to dance'. Students have been collaborating together in their groups to brainstorm and form different movements for an 8-step count introduction, finding potential song choices appropriate for their dance and starting to brainstorm and practice movements for the body of their dance. This is a fun and engaging learning activity stage 3 i thoroughly enjoying.
