A group of enthusiastic Year 9 students, along with five specially selected Year 8 students, recently took part in the North West Science and Engineering Challenge held in Burnie. This was the first time our school has participated in the regional competition, and students were divided into small teams of 2–4 to tackle a variety of STEM-based tasks. These included designing a wind turbine, building a bridge, crafting a fish trap, constructing an aircraft and decoding communication systems. The tasks required teamwork, innovation, critical thinking and a practical application of science and technology. Each team’s performance contributed to our school’s overall score and final ranking.
The day was full of new and engaging experiences, with students responding in a range of ways—some were energised by the fast-paced problem-solving, others showed great perseverance in working through unfamiliar challenges and all demonstrated a willingness to learn. It was a valuable opportunity for students to explore STEM in a hands-on setting and see how their ideas could be transformed into real-world solutions. We are proud of how our students represented the school and look forward to future challenges.
In other news, our school held its annual Cross Country last Tuesday under truly glorious weather—especially for May! It was a great day of energy, effort and encouragement across all year levels. For the first time, the Year 9 boys tackled the extended course, showing great determination and resilience. All students participated enthusiastically, whether they were running for a top spot or simply enjoying the challenge alongside their friends.
Congratulations to our champions: Lucy, Caleb, Levi, Grace, Que and Emily. A big thank you also goes to our wonderful volunteers who made the event run smoothly—those who ran the sausage sizzle, handled the audio setup and operated the coffee cart for staff and parents. It was a great community event that reflected both school spirit and support.
We are delighted to inform you that Devonport Christian School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS Assessments again this year.
