Secondary School

It has been another busy and fun-filled week in Secondary School at GSG. One of the things that has been wonderful to see as I have made my way into work recently is to see all the teams training in preparation for Country Week. It is great to see the students working hard and working as a team to represent the school.

Mokare Day

On Tuesday the whole school celebrated Mokare Day, which is a House-led initiative to raise awareness and funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The dress theme for the day was to “dress as your dream job”, and it was good to see the creativity on display from staff and students alike. We had musicians, sports stars, doctors, teachers, farmers and FBI agents. I was surprised to see how many students skipped their careers and dressed as retirees! At recess we had a cake stall and at lunchtime there was a game of students vs staff netball which was lots of fun. A special thank you to Mr McLean and Mokare House Captains, Kate and Chelsea for all their organisation. Thank you to the parents who helped with the baking and the costume design!

Upcoming Assessments and Year Ten Course Selection

We are entering examination time for the upper Secondary School. This week we started with ESTs for our Year Twelve General students and soon we will be getting into Year Twelve examinations. Mrs Franklin and I addressed the Year Twelve students last Friday to discuss timelines, requirements and gave some study tips. Students in Years Eleven and Twelve have been sent their examination timetables. I urge parents to have a discussion at home about balancing time, separating study from homework, keeping up with light exercise and ensuring that the students get enough sleep so that their brain can process their learning properly.

Our Year Ten students are not only getting ready for examinations in Week Eight, but they are starting to think about course and subject selection for next year. There are information sessions for families and students on Wednesday 18 June. In discussions at home, parents could be speaking with students about different pathways for next year, whether the students want to pursue an ATAR pathway, or a General/ VET pathway including Certificate courses and work placements. More information can be found on MyGSG. I have copied one of the links here.

Twilight Concert

One of the highlights of my week last week was attending the Twilight Concert in the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex. There was a fantastic parent turnout. We were able to see the Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Guitar and Flute ensembles, Senior Strings and the Pipe Band. A huge thank you to all our students and our staff who helped put that event together.

Colours and Honours Assembly

On Monday, we had an assembly that celebrated the achievements and commitment of our students in certain co-curricular areas. In particular, we awarded Colours to students for music, cross country, swimming, and athletics. Two students achieved the incredible feat of Honours. Thank you to all the parents who attended our assembly. We love to see parents at assemblies.
