STEM Ambassadors Visit the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute
On Wednesday 14 May, the Clayfield College STEM Ambassadors visited the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in a variety of laboratory activities to do with blood biology including using a centrifuge to separate blood components, preparing microscope slides and using micropipettes.
Queensland Titration Competition
On Saturday 24 May, eleven students from Years 8 to12 attended the Queensland Titration Competition at the University of Queensland. Titration is an analytical technique used in Chemistry to determine, very precisely, the amount of a substance.
Students compete in teams of three. Scoring is based on how far a student’s result is from the one determined by the university. A zero means that the student got the exact result. A team score is the average of each member’s score.
This year, Caroline Zhang, Claire Kong and Ema Costello's team achieved a ‘Highly Commended’ score and Poppy Ho, Manidhi Chezian and Federica Patelli's team achieved an ‘Excellent’ score.
Special mention must go to Manidhi Chezian for her score of 1 and Claire Kong for her amazing 0!
Da Vinci Decathlon Competition
This week Clayfield College had four teams participate in the Years 7 and 8 and the Years 9 and 10 Queensland da Vinci Decathlon Competitions, held at Brisbane Boys' College, over two days. Selected students from Years 7 to Year 10 were part of the four teams accompanied by Mrs McPherson and Ms Francis. There were 60 teams from across Southeast Queensland that competed over the two days.
The Queensland da Vinci Decathlon is an academic interschool gala competition operated in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon, with a variety of events of an academic nature. The theme for this year was 'Light.' All the students involved enjoyed the rigour and challenge of the day. Congratulations to all members for their excellent work and performance.
Trafalgar Castle Exchange
On Friday we will welcome back our Year 10 students, Savannah Connolly, Imogen Davies, Ava Luk, and Charlotte Strickland, from their exchange at Trafalgar Castle School in Canada. They embraced boarding life, made new friendships, and explored iconic sites including Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, and Whistler, where they saw snow, and even a Grizzly bear! This unique experience broadened their cultural horizons and fostered independence. Welcome home!
As part of our Care@Clayfield pastoral care framework, students from Years 4 to 12 will be hearing from guest presenter Jonny Shannon on Wednesday 4 June. Jonny will be exploring key concepts relevant to today’s youth including mental health, resilience and safe choices. We are then hosting a parent session in the evening, the details of which are below.
