From the Year 1 Classroom

We are well and truly into the second half of the term, and we’re thrilled with the learning we’re seeing. The children are all ready for a three-day weekend and a shorter week at school next week to recharge their batteries and finish Term 2 strong. We’ve definitely felt the shift in the weather, and the children are needing their jumpers and jackets—especially in the mornings. Also, we were so proud of all the children and their efforts at the Fun Run last Thursday. They were all little superstars—doing their best and smiling every step of the way.

LITERACY

In Initial-lit we have been looking at the sounds ‘ir’ as in stir, ‘ur’ as in ‘surf’ and ‘er’ in fern. We have been learning how we add the suffix ‘s’ to nouns to make plurals eg. Cat to cats, as well as adding ‘s’ and ‘ing’ to a verb eg. sweep- can change to sweeps and sweeping. As you read together this week, try to get your child to identify the suffixes ‘s’ and ‘ing’.

Our Tricky words this fortnight have been two, three, four, why, house and because

In Writing, we have loved looking at pictures from our mentor text The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and we are learning how to write descriptive sentences using verbs and adjectives to hook the reader in. We have been so impressed with what the students have been able to write! Try asking your child if they can explain what our vocabulary focus words of devoured, scrumptious and ingenious mean!

MATHS

We have been busy revising all the learning that we have done this semester. The students have been great at remembering all we’ve learnt about capacity. We have moved into learning about time, looking at sequencing events in time. We want the students to be able to describe what events take place over hours, days, weeks, months and years.

We’ve noticed that some students are unsure about the date of their birthdays and the months they fall in. It would be helpful to support them in learning about their birthday date and month.

RELIGION

We have begun our unit on Baptism by exploring the concepts of belonging and family. The children have also discussed the different groups they belong to and how these connections make them feel. As we continue through the unit, the children will be introduced to Baptism as a sacrament and a ritual of welcome into the Catholic Church. We will also learn about the key symbols associated with the sacrament of Baptism, including water, oil, a white garment, and a candle. Please feel free to send in any photos, baptism candles, or memorabilia from your child’s own baptism that they can share with the class.

Thanks for your continued support and enjoy the long weekend.

Take care,

Kristy, Sarah, Mikaela, Mel and Madonna
