Reconciliation Week ~ St. Mel's Fire Carriers Commissioning

We are proud to share our amazing FIRE Carriers Commissioning Ceremony, held on National Sorry Day, in the lead-up to Reconciliation Week. This significant event celebrated our incredible Year 5 and Year 6 students as they stepped into their new roles as FIRE Carriers, committed to fostering cultural respect, reconciliation, and environmental care within our school and wider community.

The ceremony was a moving and meaningful occasion, with our student leaders demonstrating deep respect and enthusiasm for the responsibilities they are taking on. Their thoughtful engagement throughout the event reflected their growing understanding of what it means to be a FIRE Carrier.

We extend our sincere thanks to Michael Chisholm from Catholic Education Sandhurst Limited for his continued support and presence at this important annual school event. We are also grateful to the TIGplus teamSeldan Andrews, Shaun, and Keagan—whose contributions enriched the day through a heartfelt Welcome to Country, a powerful smoking ceremony, and the sharing of traditional games that inspired and educated our students.

We look forward to witnessing our students grow in these roles as they lead with compassion, understanding, and a commitment to reconciliation and care for Country.

Let's introduce our new FIRE Carriers ~ Congratulations!

Catholic Education Sandhurst Reconciliation Mass

Our school was privileged to join with all Catholic schools across the diocese at St. Joseph’s Church in Benalla for the annual Catholic Education Sandhurst Reconciliation Mass. This special gathering brought students, staff, and community members together in a spirit of unity and respect, acknowledging the importance of reconciliation in our faith and our nation’s story.

The celebration began with a powerful smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country, led by Billy Cooper, Yorta Yorta Man, reminding us of the deep connection to the land and the continuing cultures of First Nations peoples. The rituals and prayers woven through the Mass beautifully highlighted the importance of building respectful relationships and walking together in harmony.

A particular highlight of the day was the choir, whose voices soared through St. Joseph’s, filling the church with a sense of hope and joy. The evocative sounds of the didgeridoo added a moving, spiritual depth to the celebration, reminding us of the rich traditions that shape our shared journey of faith.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this annual event, which deepens our understanding of reconciliation and strengthens our commitment to justice, respect, and peace. Our Year 6 FIRE Carriers represented our school with absolute pride.

Celebrating Pentecost – The Birthday of the Church!

On Sunday 8th, when our Sacramental Candidates are confirmed, we celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost occurs 50 days after Easter and marks the moment the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles, giving them the courage and strength to share the Good News of Jesus with the world. Pentecost is often called the Birthday of the Church, because it marks the beginning of the Church’s mission in the world.

At our school, Pentecost reminds us that we are called to be people of courage, hope, and unity. Just like the early disciples, we are invited to share God’s love with others through our words and actions. The Holy Spirit continues to guide and inspire us today, helping us build a community that is welcoming, compassionate, and filled with joy.

To celebrate Pentecost in our school community, students have been learning about the symbols of the Holy Spirit, wind, fire, and the dove and reflecting on how the Spirit is active in their own lives. You might like to ask your child:

  • What does Pentecost mean to you?
  • How can we be guided by the Holy Spirit in our everyday actions?
  • What gifts of the Holy Spirit do you see in our family?

May the fire of the Holy Spirit renew our hearts and our school community this Pentecost season.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Open our HEARTS up to the world & be COMPASSIONATE!
