WINTER WARMER!
And just like that Winter is in full swing and we are rugging up in layers and longing for any sign of the sun between the clouds. With the colder weather comes the increased risk of cold, flu, sore throats and respiratory illness.
Early statics are already showing increased numbers of Influenza and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in Victoria this year.
So, what can we do to try and prevent being overrun with sick children this Winter?
Immunisation is always a good method to preventing illness. Having the annual Flu vax is recommended to help cover yourself and students from the various strains of influenza. A new immunisation for RSV has been developed and released in Australia. Currently the vaccine is available to women who are 28 to 36 weeks pregnant for free to offer protection to newborn babies. For everyone else looking to protect themselves against RSV, unfortunately this is not funded by the government and will cost you approximately $300.
Other effective measures to prevent the Winter viruses include;
Washing hands or using sanitiser regularly, particularly before eating or touching face or after using a tissue
Encourage students to cough or sneeze into their elbow or tissue
Ensure adequate ventilation in rooms
Stay home if unwell.
Viruses do not respond to antibiotics and the best way to treat your unwell child includes;
Plenty of rest at home
Encourage them to remain hydrated, it’s okay if they lose their appetite when they are unwell, but it is important to keep them hydrated with fluids. Remember the fluids should have some electrolytes in them like hydrolyte, juice or milk.
Normal saline nasal sprays are good for nasal congestion and can be bought over the counter at chemists
Panadol can be given 4-6hrly and Ibuprofen 8hrly as needed to help with pain, feeling lethargic or miserable.
Viruses should resolve within a few days – week, while those pesky coughs can linger for quite a while longer after an illness
As always if you are concerned about your child, you should seek medical review with your local doctor
