Bush Tucker

By Xavier M (Grade 6 FIRE Carrier)

Bush tucker is what the First Nations people called food that is from the land.  It could be meat, berries, leaves, roots, eucalyptus and native fruits.  The indigenous people are very sustainable and only take what they need.  They also feel that they should return something to the land if they have taken something. The indigenous hunters preferred to eat kangaroo meat and dingoes.

Some examples of bush tucker are kangaroo, emu, witchetty grubs, quandongs, wattleseed, Kakadu plum, lemon myrtle, wild turkey, rock wallaby, possums, snakes and lizards, anteaters and Witchetty grubs.

The Kakadu Plum has also been called the "Wonder From Down Under," It contains 100 times more Vitamin C than oranges do.

Witchetty grubs are a protein-rich insect that the indigenous people loved to eat.

I think that the Indigenous people cared for the environment and only took what they needed from the land.  They also ate very healthy foods to keep them well and knew what to eat if they were sick.
