Interschool Sport

It was a cold and windy morning, but that didn’t stop the Albion North students from getting out and giving it their all on the sports field. This term, students have been participating in newcome (volleyball with adapted rules), netball, and football as part of our interschool sport program.

With today being a home game, I was lucky enough to watch our students in action. It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and giving their best effort. Even more impressive was seeing our new school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Teamwork on full display throughout the morning.

Instructional Coaching

As Mr Squires mentioned in our first newsletter this term, we’ve begun implementing instructional coaching in classrooms for all teachers at Albion North Primary School.

A key focus of this work is Explicit Teaching, which is a central element of the Department of Education’s new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0). Through coaching, we’re supporting teachers to strengthen their practice, reflect on their teaching, and ensure all students are engaged and supported in their learning.

Explicit instruction is a very efficient strategy for helping students learn because it suits how the brain processes, stores, and retrieves information. It works for students of all ages, and all backgrounds.

There are a few components of explicit teaching but the few we have been working on at Albion North have been activating prior knowledge, stating learning intentions and success criteria, providing clear explanations and new knowledge, scaffolding learning and modelling practice.

We’ve loved getting into classrooms to teach, support, and observe and the staff at Albion North have been incredibly receptive to this process. It’s a real credit to our amazing team of teachers who have embraced this opportunity to reflect and grow in their practice.

It’s also been a joy for us to get back into the classroom and teach the wonderful students here at Albion North.
