Reconciliation Week

This week was Reconciliation Week. It’s a time when we acknowledge our shared histories, including the stolen generation, and move forward together with respect and understanding.
On Tuesday school captains Connor and Holly, Mrs Langley and myself joined other schools in the Reconciliation Walk to Melville Oval as a show of respect and support for the Indigenous community. We heard speeches from Gunditjmara Elders and local school captains.
On Thursday, Tayla Wakely and Macahlia Rose from Winda-Mara hosted a lunch at school for Indigenous kids and then Josh Franks (Koorie Education Support Officer) read a story and held a yarning circle. We thank them for their generosity and for sharing their knowledge.
This week students have also been learning about bush foods, learning some Dhauwurd Wurrung language such as ngata/hello, learning about the stolen generation, listening to stories, finding out about the world’s first bakers, playing Indigenous games and making red, yellow and black wrist bands.
Every student at Gray Street has also written a response to Reconciliation Week on paper leaves which will be displayed in the Open Learning Area.
