Molesworth Street Kindergarten

From Audrey, Early Childhood Teacher

During Reconciliation Week, the children participated in meaningful collaborative experiences to help them connect with and enrich their existing knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

The children worked together to create a beautiful artwork of the Aboriginal flag using wool, which provided an opportunity to discuss the flag’s meaning and significance.

On another hand, it also encouraged their fine motor skills. The children realised that wool is harder to cut and paste than paper so more patience was needed!

The children learned and sang the traditional Torres Strait Islander song Taba Naba.

What does it actually mean?

Come on let's go to the reef, Get into the dinghy when the morning tide is low, Let us row to the edge of the reef, Come on let's go to the reef.

The children created their own boats, which they added to our reef-themed play area. We found out that our Teacher Rachel have been to the Torres Strait Island many years ago. She showed us where they were on the map and we were very lucky to have learned from her experience.
