Spotlight on Grade 6

In recognition of Reconciliation Week, Grade 6 students have been exploring the rich cultural significance of native Australian plants. Through their learning, they have gained insight into the important role flowers and plants play in Aboriginal culture, identity, and storytelling. Inspired by the work of Indigenous artists such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Anthea Riley, and Gloria Petyarre, students created their own artworks that reflect their understanding and respect for these traditions.

As part of the process, students have been developing their painting techniques. The have been experimenting with brushwork, layering, and colour mixing to express texture, pattern, and movement in their compositions. In the next session, they will be creating artist statements to accompany their work. These statements will help them reflect on their creative process, the meaning behind their artworks, and how their learning about Aboriginal culture influenced their ideas.
