Kitchen Garden

Our final sessions of the year

We have had a huge final month in the kitchen. We cracked out the barbie and cooked the most amazing veggie burgers. Made with mushroom, beans, carrot, rice and other seasonings these burgers were a hit with (almost) all of the students.

They could build their own burger choosing at least two colourful vegetables from a range of options including lettuce, avocado, beetroot, pickles, cheese, tomato and sauces.

Another huge thank you to Alex and Elisa (parents of Elia in 3/4PC) for donating the delicious burger rolls for the last 4 weeks. You can visit their bakery in The Grain Emporium in Clayton.

Students also learnt how to make their own crisps by shallow frying thinly sliced potato in vegetable oil until crispy. These are really simple to make and reduce the need to buy chips in plastic bags. You also have the fun of adding your own seasonings. Someone commented that they were better than Kettle chips!

Recipes can be found below!

In the garden we have been decorating the beehive, creating recycled cards, practising the names of the equipment in the kitchen and cleaning around the school. All 3/4 students have also had an opportunity to visit the chickens in small groups, collecting the eggs, hand feeding them, topping up their food and water and cleaning the coop.

We need your help!

Don’t forget that our egg raffle is running for one last week for 2023. If you have previously bought tickets, they are still valid but it is not too late to get involved and buy a ticket for this Friday's draw.

Winners will be drawn at the last assembly Friday 15th. Buy your tickets here- https://compasstix.com/e/7y4kho0b9c

After last week's call-out, we were so impressed that almost 20 families have signed up to help us look after the chickens over the summer break.

We do still need some further help as many days are still empty. If you are going to be in St Kilda over the summer, please consider whether you can help out by signing up for a day or more here- https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B094BABA62EA3F85-46609540-summer

Thanks again to our volunteers this month and throughout the whole year. The program could not run without you, and it is a pleasure for the teachers and students to connect with so many members of the community during the kitchen and garden sessions.

We are looking forward to more pleasurable food growing and eating adventures in 2024!

Thanks,

Chantel and Alli
