Connect: Foundation
Our Preps have had an eventful and fun start to the year. They are learning the routines and expectations of being a student at Skye Primary School.
Key Dates
Tuesday 13th February: Meet the Teacher/Twilight Sports 3:30pm-5:30pm
Friday 16th February: Curriculum Day (student free)
Monday 5th of March: Student commence full-time
Wednesday 6th March: Library sessions commence
Literacy
We have introduced students to our Phonics song. We will sing this daily to learn the sounds of the alphabet. Next week students will learn the letter M, the sound it makes in a word and the correct formation when writing. We encourage you to play the song at home. The link can be found here. Every Monday students will write a ‘Weekend Recount’. This doesn’t have to be necessarily what they did on the weekend, but any message that they want to share with their teacher. Many of our preps tried writing letters this week to accompany the pictures they drew. We are focusing on correct pencil grip and the qualities of a good writer.
Maths
In Maths we are focusing on counting from 1-10 using number songs. We used unifix to count to 10 focusing on careful counting and making patterns. We will introduce students to sorting and categorising items and identifying, creating and continuing making a pattern. We currently have a focus on shapes and their qualities.
Inquiry
Our unit this term is ‘In Our Community.’ Students will consider what it means to be a bucket filler. Children will be encouraged to fill their peers’ buckets with kindness and compliments. They will decorate their own paper bucket and be reminded to show kindness towards others as it contributes to a positive classroom and school community.
Specialist
Over the next few weeks the Preps will be completing a mini book about Japan in class with Ms Blenkiron and Ms Schodde. They are just tracing over some words and colouring.
Reminders
The Victorian Government provides a free health, wellbeing and development check for all prep students. Families have been provided with information about the Online School Entrant Health Questionnaire. You can use the provided QR code to log in or please click this link Home (educationapps.vic.gov.au) to complete this questionnaire.
Satchels
Students will be taking home their satchels on Friday 9th February with a packet of alphabet letters. There will be instructions provided on how to learn the sounds of the letters. Please send the satchels to school daily as we will be using them to practise the alphabet sounds at school.
Shoelaces
We have noticed there are many children who come to school with laces. If they can't tie their laces, it is recommended they have velcro shoes. Here is a video to assist with learning to tie laces.
