What's happening in our classroom?

Literacy

Over the next two weeks students will be working on the following topics in Literacy:

  • Reading collaboratively during Book Club
  • Creating seeds that will be used for future writing pieces
  • Responding to texts read, focusing on THICK questions (those that require more than a 1 word response)
  • Fluency when reading; pace, accuracy and expression
  • Engaging the reader with a sizzling start
  • Planning and creating their own narrative texts

Numeracy

Moving forward in our mathematics learning students will be focusing on addition and subtraction. Students will be learning efficient mental and written strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. Included in this topic is a strong focus on the importance of estimating and rounding when solving equations.

We will also be spending some time exploring data as part of our mathematics learning. This will involve students posing questions and collecting data to construct appropriate for their data type.

Inquiry

This term students will be following a unit of learning titled 'Think Global, Act Local'. To begin students will be learning about the natural world, and how we as humans are changing it. There will be a specific focus on sustainability within this unit of learning, as students begin to learn about what sustainability means and what we can do in our everyday lives to care for the world around us. We look forward to sharing our learning throughout the term as we grow in our understanding together.

Well-being

Over the next two weeks we will be working on:

  •  Becoming familiar with the concept of Zones of Regulation
  •   Understanding how people interpret the emotional responses of others through             observation of body language
  • Recognising positive, negative and mixed emotions

Celebration of Learning

Place Value Puzzle Activity

Students created their own place value chart, selecting any number they wanted as the starting number. They then cut out the chart into multiple pieces for other students to solve. Some students began with two, three or four-digit numbers, decimal numbers and negative numbers. The students all showed excellent persistence with the activity and were very proud when they were able to celebrate and share their creations with others.

Kitchen Garden is back for 2024!

5A had a terrific time this week during Kitchen Garden. The wonderful program has returned for 2024 and our students will have the opportunity to cook and learn new recipes with Mrs Furlong.

5B will have their first Kitchen Garden session on Wednesday the 21st of February.
