STEAM, 2024!

Firstly, congratulations to the 2024 STEAM Captains: Charlie, Taj and Isla!

We enter the 2nd year of the EPS STEAM Program with much excitement and enthusiasm. What worked? What didn't? How can we be even more engaging this year? These are some of the questions we asked ourselves during the summer holidays.

Research out of the University of South Australia tells us that gamified education is one of the keys to boosting STEAM capabilities in primary school students as it can improve spatial reasoning skills and shape positive attitudes towards STEAM and design thinking.

The study showed that regular use of Makers Empire - a gamified 3D computer-aided design program - can significantly improve the above mentioned skills in up to 85% of children.

So guess what?!  We now have a subscription to Makers Empire for all of our Year 5/6 students.

Year 5/6

This term students will be analysing various mascots from around the world and determining the values they exude. In small groups, students will then be creating, and designing (in Makers Empire) a Year 5/6 mascot to represent the cohort this year. One mascot will reign supreme and will be 3D printed.

Year 3/4

We will again partner with Inspire Robotics to provide students with an incredible opportunity to work in small teams to build robots to compete against each other in a Battle Bot Competition! Students will get the chance to make and control their own robots.  Of course we will end with a 'winner takes all' competition! Stay tuned.

Year 1

This term students will be playing digital detectives as they learn about safe online behaviours. This unit of work links in with the Year 1 Big Question, and students will be learning how to create media arts to relay a message, either about positive choices or strategies to regulate emotions.
