Spirit and sportsmanship shine at Years 3-6 Interhouse Athletics Carnival

On Friday 16 August, our Year 3–6 students participated in their Interhouse Athletics Carnival, showcasing the results of their hard work and preparation throughout the term. The day was filled with impressive sportsmanship and vibrant team spirit, with students cheering and celebrating not only for their own factions but for everyone competing.

The event featured a range of activities including team games, shot put, javelin, long jump, relay races, tug of war and running events.

Congratulations to Stirling for winning the overall championship and to Murdoch for winning the Team Spirit Award!

Students Featured in Dr Ann Jones' Latest Adventure

Several of our students featured in the Catalyst episode ‘The Secret Lives of Our Urban Birds: Perth’ which aired on Tuesday 13 August at 8.30pm on ABC TV. Dr Ann Jones is on her latest adventure, this time across Perth. Uncovering secrets from majestic wedge-tailed eagles to splendid fairy wrens, she discovers why people are passionate about their charismatic birds.

Read about Dr Jones’s interview, in which she describes the highlight of the episode being Ms Crane’s class of Year 4 students (now in Year 5), here. Watch the episode and stream the other episodes in the series on ABC iview.

Taiko On - Japanese Festival Drumming

On Friday 2 August, students from Years 3-6 watched a special performance of Japanese Festival Drumming given by the group Taiko On. Simon and his team of drummers gave a fabulous performance, taught the students some phrases in Japanese, and answered many questions about the importance of drumming in Japanese culture. Year 6 students were lucky enough to have half-hour workshops where they could learn how to drum just like Taiko On.

Cranial Challenge

This term, six students from Years 5 and 6 took part in the Cranial Challenge. Across three weeks, we competed in mixed teams with other schools, taking part in Maths, Engineering and General Knowledge. In Maths we participated in two major activities. The first was a Maths quiz on the website Quizizz. Then up came Maths on the Run, which were our favourites for the day. There were 30 questions and we had to solve them quickly and run back and forth to the teachers on the other side of the room, who marked the questions. Two of the six students in our team achieved first place in this challenge, answering 20 out of 22 questions correctly.

The next week, we participated in Engineering. The task was to design and create a school playground for all ages using paper, pipe cleaners, sticky tape and other materials. It was an extremely challenging and fun experience that we all enjoyed immensely. The last week tested General Knowledge. Every group received a set of questions on nine different topics. Overall, we found this challenge extremely delightful, and will certainly recommend to students next year that they take on this challenge.
