We went to Sovereign Hill for camp and it was amazing! We stayed at the Sovereign Hill Hotel and it did not disappoint!!!
We did many activities at at night and day, the evening highlights were:
· The Pantomime: we sat in an old fashioned stage where a guy sang famous songs from the 1850s era, then he and his accomplice performed a magic show with a magician and green goblin character. It was a little bit cringe but also quite funny.
· Aura: we went to to 3 different movies. One was a 4D show about how Earth was formed, the second was a light show about Bunjil and creation from an Indigenous perspective and the last bit was a show about the European miners rising up against the government of Victoria at Ballarat.
They were sooooo good!

Some of the other awesome activities were the mine tours, free time, gold pour, education sessions, lolly making and street demos.
In the gold mine tour, we took a tram down into blackness for 90 seconds. We saw how men dug for gold underground.
Most people spent their money on raspberry, grape and sour drops. Some people bought pocket watches, jewellery and soaps.

In writing this term, Gr. 5’s have been doing persuasives on any topic they like, for instance I’ve been writing about how Steph Curry is the best point guard in NBA history. Some of my classmates chose to persuade AFL clubs to send players to do footy clinics or why they should get a phone, iPad or a certain app.
We’ve been working on these for about 3 weeks, in the next few weeks we are going to be creating an 1850s newspaper article about finding gold.
In reading we have been learning about author’s try to persuade us e.g. why feral cats need to be culled, the problem with plastic pollution and unpacking ads.

Lately in inquiry, we’ve been working on the gold rushes and gold uses. We started just before camp at Sovereign Hill which was one of the largest mining areas.
Some modern gold uses are: jewellery, denistry, circuitry in electrical components and in astronaut visors. Whereas information about the goldrushes includes:
· The California goldrush started before ours in 1848 compared to 1851.
· Edward Hargraves won 10,000 pounds for finding gold in NSW
· The Victorian Government led by Charles La Trobe offered 200 pounds for gold found within 200 miles of Melbourne. This is what led to the goldrush in Victoria bringing masses of people to Victoria from overseas.
· Victoria has sourced 1/3 of the whole world’s gold!

We’ve been doing multiplication and division in maths lately. We’ve tested different styles to find the most efficient ways of doing them. We liked the lattice and vertical method for multiplication and the bus stop method for short division. We’ve been applying these to worded problems.
We’re also learning the link between multiplication and division facts e.g. that 8 x 12 = 96 so 96 /12 = 8 and 96 /8 = 12.
