Book Week 2024 was celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm by everyone at SPS.
2024 CBCA Books
Each day during Book Week, the whole school joined Alison's Webex Room at lunch eating time to hear some of our senior students read a selection of this year's Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) short-listed books. These are books which have been nominated for the 2024 Australian Children's Book of the Year.
This is always a fun Book Week activity, and allows all students to experience these wonderful books during Book Week. Many thanks to the students who read the books aloud - Tommy, Ryan L, Harmony, Elena, Leila, Savannah, Noah G, Dante, Emily and Celeste.This is quite a daunting experience, and they all accomplished it with confidence and ease.
For those people who may be interested, the 2024 CBCA Book of the Year Awards were held on Friday 16th August. There are several categories of book judged each year; of those most relevant to primary school-aged readers, the following books were the winners:
Book of the Year for Early Childhood (Entries in this category are appropriate in style and content for children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading).
Winner - Gymnastica Fantastica!, written and illustrated by Briony Stewart
Picture Book of the Year (Entries in this category are outstanding books of the Picture Book genre)
Winner - Timeless, written and illustrated by Kelly Canby
Book of the Year for New Illustrator (This Award aims to recognise and encourage new talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration).
Winner - Hope is the Thing, illustrations by Erica Wagner and text by Johanna Bell
Book of the Year for Younger Readers (Entries in this category are appropriate in style and content for readers from the middle to upper primary years).
Winner- Scar Town, written by Tristan Bancks
