Debating

Debating has continued strongly at PHSC in Term 3.

In term 3, our senior debaters in years 9 – 11 competed in the final round of the DAV Schools Competition. All teams had a great season in 2024, and although our teams didn’t compete in the finals, they experienced some excellent wins and learned valuable lessons from the losses of the season.

Whilst the competition has wrapped up for seniors, things have just begun for our enthusiastic Juniors in Years 7 & 8. The Junior Secondary Program (JSP) began in mid-August with an informative and fun training night at Coburg High School. Students learnt more about the structure of debating and the key features they should try to utilise in their own speeches. The night was full of valuable knowledge to help them build upon the successful Debating Symposium hosted by Xavier College in Term 2.

A successful Round 1 was held in the middle of the term, where students worked hard to present their speeches on the topic: That we should ban advertisements that target children. The students enjoyed battling this topic out in our meetings and in the debate, with two out of four teams coming away with the win. As part of the JSP, students also receive training throughout the debate nights and observed an entertaining Exhibition Debate from DAV adjudicators.

The final debates as part of the DAV program will be held in Term 4 at Coburg High School
