Music Update

Term 3 was busy with many rehearsals across our ensemble, instrumental, and VCE programs as students prepared for our end of year concert series and examinations.

We held our first Spring Chamber Concert since 2019 at the beautiful Church of All Nations in Carlton. The evening featured our VCE Repertoire programs from Zoe Hannaford, Maysie Penhale, and En Kim-Anderson. It was fantastic to hear the students performing to such a high level, as well as showcasing our classical small ensembles.

Our annual Jazz/Latin/Soul gig this year took place at the Wesley Anne, featuring our leading contemporary bands. It was great to hear so many different styles of music as well as students improvising and taking lead solos; an impressive feat!

Adjacent to the music program; this year's orchestra for the State School Spectacular featured students Sam Thompson, Caius Belmont, and Aya Pratt. It's a gruelling run rehearsing and preparing for these performances; well done to all students!

We hit the ground running in Term 4, with concerts beginning in Week 1. Two separate VCE Music Nights showcased 10 VCE Contemporary Music Exam Programs on stage at the Wesley Anne. Students performed beautifully, sounding well & truly ready for their exams. This year PHSC hosted VCE Music Exams onsite in the theatre for the first time since 2021. This was of great benefit to students, who were able to perform in a familiar environment. Most reported their exam was ‘kinda fun.’ So good to hear!

Many instrumental students have now completed their AMEB Examinations for 2024, and others are preparing for the upcoming ABRSM exams, hosted onsite at PHSC. Congratulations to AMEB students on their exam results, and to all students for their hard work. Special congratulations to Delphi Turner who received an A on her AMEB Grade 7 Violin Exam! A commendable achievement Delphi, well done.

Acoustic Music Night just took place at the stunning Fitzroy Town Hall, and featured our Guitar, Strings, Woodwind and Percussion Ensembles, as well as the Orchestra and Arnold Street. The concert program ranged from Mozart to Bizet, Coldplay to Outkast! Students played beautifully, sounding super solid after nearly a year of rehearsing, playing and performing together.

There are more concerts to come! Check out the full schedule for the rest of the year (including links to tickets) at https://www.phsc.vic.edu.au/music-dept/events/
