How The World Works

Year 3 Term 3/4 2024

Transdisciplinary Theme

'How the world works'

Central Idea

Innovation affects society and the environment

As an International Baccalaureate World School, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.

Our Term 3/4 unit of inquiry explores various inventions and their effect on individuals, society and the environment. From prehistoric times to the 21st century, inventions have changed the world. Some inventions have marked a number of key turning points in human history, transforming society and our daily lives.

Concepts

  • Function: Students will explore the purpose and role of different inventions and innovations, understanding how they are designed to meet specific needs or solve particular problems
  • Causation: This concept will help students understand the reasons behind the development of various inventions and their subsequent effects on society and the environment
  • Connection: Students will investigate how inventions are interconnected with societal changes and environmental impacts, examining how innovations influence and are influenced by various factors

Lines of Inquiry

  • Reasons for inventions
  • The design process
  • Impact of new inventions

Action

It has been wonderful to observe the action initiated independently by our students. During our last unit ‘Sharing the planet’, students showed action in a variety of ways. Many students brought books in to share with the class about endangered animals. Some students had discussions at home about using products that don’t contain palm oil and many students were diligent about people putting their rubbish in the bin.

The final task in the unit required the students to share the story of an endangered animal and suggest ways children can show action such as picking up rubbish, saving water.

Learner Profile

  • Risktaker: Students will be encouraged to embrace new ideas and take risks in exploring the potential of various innovations. They will learn to approach challenges with confidence and creativity
  • Reflective: Students will reflect on the impacts of innovations on society and the environment, considering both positive and negative aspects. They will also assess their own learning and actions, making connections to their personal experiences and understanding

 Approaches to learning

  • Thinking Skills: Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they analyse the reasons for inventions, evaluate their impacts, and reflect on the design process. They will engage in creative thinking to propose innovative solutions to current challenges
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication will be essential as students share their findings and ideas through presentations, discussions, and collaborative projects. They will practice articulating their thoughts clearly and listening to others’ perspectives
