Teaching & Learning
Writing at Croydon SDS
As a part of embedding our whole-school approach to literacy, our teaching staff participated in professional learning on the 28th of August. Staff strengthened their understanding of Comprehensive Literacy for All with a focus on writing.
Key takeaways included;
- All students have the ability to develop writing skills.
- Writing instruction is important to assist all students, including those who use AAC.
- Writing development strengthens students' understanding of language.
To support students in developing their writing skills, teachers plan to include daily;
Writing by adults is when adults model the formation and function of writing to students. Activities may include writing lists and notes or writing a simple sentence on a topic of the day.
Shared writing is when the adult takes the major role of constructing and recording text. Students are involved in selecting topics and keywords as an adult models the construction of the sentence.
Independent writing opportunities enable students to experience success in forming letters into words, and words into sentences. Writing is not limited to handwriting; many students develop their writing skills through typing or using a scribe.
To support students' development of writing skills, we use a software program called Clicker 8. The software is adaptable to support all the needs of our students. An invitation will be sent home with your child on the 6th of September or follow the link https://activate.cricksoft.com/h?QHrjnnjOUsh9eXiBa.iDg . If you have further questions regarding the software or how your child is accessing writing, please speak with their teacher.
