Principal Message

Term 1 - 23rd February

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Mitcham Primary School Community,

Amidst the bustling halls of Mitcham Primary, we've embarked on a fortnight brimming with captivating experiences that ignite growth and inspire learning.

On Monday, February 12th, our Grade 6 Leaders showcased their leadership skills at the GRIP Leadership Conference in Melbourne. The conference concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as SCHOOL LEADERS. It was inspiring to see them represent our school with confidence and enthusiasm.

Additionally, all our Grade 6 students underwent Peer Mediation Training, equipping them with valuable conflict resolution skills. Next week, they will begin Peer Mediation yard duty, demonstrating their newfound ability to resolve disputes peacefully—a vital life skill.

A heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended our Open Classrooms and Parent Information Sessions last week. Your involvement and support are invaluable to us. We also appreciate your enthusiasm in participating in our Volunteer training—it truly takes a village to foster a thriving school community.

Our Grade 5/6 students had the privilege of hosting guest speakers from 'Courage to Care,' a program aimed at promoting acceptance of diversity and combating prejudice, racism, and discrimination. This initiative aligns with our commitment to nurturing compassionate and inclusive citizens who are “upstanders” against injustice.

Continual teacher education is key to our mission of providing the best learning environment for our students. We have been thrilled to welcome back Lisa Keskinen this week, an esteemed author, educator, and consultant. Lisa presented a wonderful workshop to staff on Monday afternoon and has worked alongside all level teams during classroom ‘Writer’s Workshop’ lessons this week, Lisa will continue to collaborate with us throughout this year, enhancing our professional knowledge and skills in English instruction.

Furthermore, we are excited to announce that Kristy Elliott (B.Ed, MAPP) will be joining us to deliver professional development in restorative practices and positive education psychology during our Pupil Free Day on Friday. With her extensive experience, we look forward to further cultivating a culture of kindness, respect and resilience within our school community.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the success of our students. Together, we will continue to create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Exciting developments are underway thanks to the efforts of our wonderful FUNdraising committee! With funds raised, we've acquired Burbang Birrang Caring for Country Outdoor Seating and new Hydration Stations. These additions not only enhance our school environment but also hold cultural significance, connecting us to Indigenous heritage. Renowned Indigenous artist Brett Parker's work adorns these installations, enriching our spaces with his unique artistic perspective. While installation takes time, we aim to have everything in place by early March. Your support has truly transformed our school, fostering cultural appreciation and providing essential amenities for our students.
