What we are learning in Grade 1

Literacy

Students have been learning two phonemes this week. ‘Ai’ as in ‘snail trail’ and ‘ay’ as in ‘play all day’. They have also been learning actions to help remember the sounds and sayings. Next week’s phonemes will be ‘ee’ as in ‘teeny green tree’ and ‘ea’ as in ‘seals at the beach’. Fairy tales have been used as mentor texts with students practicing turning fragments into full sentences. Students have also been exploring their schema, making text to self and text to text connections.

Numeracy

During maths students have been exploring patterns with shape and number. This number sense of skip counting is being developed with the use of 100’s charts, songs, games, activities and bundling. These skills are then used to work through maths problem-solving tasks. It has been great to see the many ways students approach these problems. During these sessions students are developing their ability to articulate and share their thinking.

Wellbeing

Term one has the wellbeing focus of Emotional Literacy. Students have been developing their ability to recognising and identifying their own and others emotions. Developing emotional literacy helps students to build and maintain friendships as well as successfully navigate their day. Students are continuing to earn Dojo points for displaying the Skye Primary School values relating to Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationship.

Inquiry

Term one sees Grade 1 exploring the Inquiry topic Celebrating Differences. Students have enjoyed using Google maps to see Australia's location in the world. They were excited to zoom in on Skye Primary and try to spot their classroom. This exploration is part of wider discussions regarding the diversity of culture found within Australia and beyond.
