Creative Minds Exhibition

Please join us at Friday’s opening of the 2024 Creative Minds Exhibition at 6:30pm at the Eltham Library Community Gallery to celebrate last year’s VCE art students’ final artworks being exhibited in the local community together with the art of students from other local schools. It will be a great evening of viewing our alumni and their creative expressions one more time.

Heide Museum of Modern Art

On Tuesday 20 February, Year 12 Art Making and Exhibiting students, from both the Art and Photography classes, visited Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen. The highlight of their visit was the captivating Lee Miller Exhibition, which provided a fascinating insight into the surrealist world of this pioneering photographer.

Lee Miller, an American-born artist, emerged as one of the most original photographic voices of the twentieth century. Even before she was aware of the surrealist movement, Miller's work exuded a surreal quality that defied conventional expectations. The exhibition of photographs, curated by her son Antony Penrose, spanned a remarkable career, showcasing her talent and her unconventional life experiences.

The exhibition, which includes 100 photographs, offers a comprehensive view of Miller's work, revealing her deep engagement with the world around her. Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Miller's life work, guided by the expertise of tour leader Annie. Through Annie's insightful commentary, students gained a deeper understanding of Miller's life, her artistic vision, and the curation of the Exhibition.

One of the striking aspects of Miller's life was her association with a diverse circle of artists and intellectuals, including Man Ray, Picasso, Max Ernst, and Dora Maar. Much like the Reeds at Heide, Miller and her husband Roland Penrose fostered a creative community at Farley Farm in Sussex, underscoring the parallels between their lives and those of the artists nurtured at Heide.

Following the gallery tour, students enjoyed lunch amidst the picturesque surroundings of Heide's parkland before exploring Heide Modern, the adjacent mid-century house turned gallery space.

Our students are now busy preparing for their upcoming Unit 3 SAC that will draw on the knowledge gained from our visit to Heide.
