Greater Western Region Cross Country
On the 27th of May, eight students journeyed to Warrnambool for the Greater Western Region Cross Country, hoping to secure their place in the State Finals. Although a cool breeze swept across the course, this did not deter our athletes, with Emmett Tiley leading the charge, alongside Thomas Grant. Both boys performed well, with Thomas finishing 11th and securing himself a top 12 place, that will see him go on to State Finals.
Next up, Maddison Wade and Jonah Burrill competed against a stacked 13-year-old age group. Both put in an awesome effort, finishing mid field. Evalyn Hayward, in the 15-year-old age group, was able to hold a steady pace and, although she snuck past a few in the final 400m, was unable to crack the top 50. Billy Welsh, determined to make it into the top 12, pushed hard and, as a result of his valiant effort, came 12th, securing a spot at State Finals as well.
While the other students ran the 3km track, Nic Stares and Fletcher Holz had to complete the 5km track. Nic fought hard against some very challenging opponents, some of whom went on to break records, however he was still able to place in the top 50. Fletcher, despite the cheering support from the rest of the team, was unable to close the gap between himself and the 12th place getter, crossing the line in an admirable 14th place.
Well done to all who competed! It takes an impressive effort to make it to the GWR level and an even bigger one to walk away with a place in the top 20. Stay tuned for the State Cross Country results early next term.
Year 7 Netball
On Wednesday the 12th of June, our Year 7 Girls went to Ballarat to compete in the Eureka Division Netball. With nine teams ready to compete, it was set to be a busy day with a lot of running, shooting, passing and defending.
Our first match was against Mount Clear B and we didn't know what to expect. Goalkeeper, Lexi Nevill, played extremely well, achieving at least 5 intercepts throughout the game, allowing us to keep Mount Clear B scoreless, resulting in a 7-0 win. With one win on the board, we went into the next game confident but soon realised that Daylesford was going to make us work for it. Despite looking promising in the final 5 minutes, we could not capitalise, losing 0-8.
The third game against Mount Rowan was a lot more competitive, with both teams scoring. Megan Fraser was a highlight in goals, as was Milly Kerr in Centre, resulting in Beaufort walking away with the win, 9-3. The following game, against Woodmans Hill, saw a change in positions, with Lucy Hayward putting in a spectacular performance in Goalkeeper and Riley Connelly moving well through the centre. Their efforts afforded us our 3rd win of the day, 7-1.
With a slow start against a tough Phoenix A team, we were fortunate to win the second half due to the constant efforts of Maddi Wade and Amelia Duff. However, our slow start cost us the game, with the final score 5-12 in favour of Phoenix. With fatigue kicking in and a challenging three games ahead, the team, boosted by some lolly snakes, fought hard against a tough Ballarat High crew. Although new to the game, Lexi Bucknall and Isabella Angwin held their own, intercepting some critical passes, while running with their players. Unfortunately we went down 1-14.
In Round 8 we came up against Mount Clear A. Thanks to consistent work from Milly Kerr and Megan Fraser, it was a close game throughout, however we were unable to get the win, losing 3-8.
In the final game, we came up against a very competitive Phoenix B team. Despite great performances from Maddi Wade and Lucy Hayward, we were unable to get another win, going down 3-7. We finished the day in 5th place, with Ballarat High School progressing to the next level.
Well done to all students involved. You represented the school in a manner of which you should be proud. Thank you to the parents who were there on the day supporting the girls and special thanks to Reagan Fulford for umpiring. Reagan, one of our Year 12 students, has umpired the inter-school netball tournaments on behalf of BSC for several years, and while this was to be her final school tournament, we are sure we will see her around the courts in future.
