This week in Reading we are learning to summarise a text. 


VOCABULARY

Summarise - telling the most important parts of a text, in your own words, in a much shorter way

 

Non Fiction - books that are real and include true, factual information

 

Facts - statements that are true

 

Important - something significant

 

Information - knowledge or facts


ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Read the below paragraph to your child and have them summarise the text in their own words. Remind them that they summarise using only the important information.

  • Elephants are amazing animals that are very big and have long trunks. They use their trunks to eat tasty leaves and drink water. Elephants also have big ears that help them stay cool in hot weather. Did you know they can make loud trumpet sounds too? Elephants live together in families called herds, and they take care of each other. They are super friendly and smart animals!”

Important information =  Elephants are big and have long trunks. They use their trunks to eat and drink etc
