Captains impress as Attorney-General ticks bucket list
Our college captains always present as excellent ambassadors of GSSC and that was the case for a surprise visitor on 14 June.
Attorney-General of Victoria Jaclyn Symes found time in her busy diary to drop in for a tour of GSSC, spending more than an hour seeing the school in action.
Ms Symes said the visit had long been on her bucket list of “must dos” as the Member for Northern Victoria.
Executive Principal Barbara O’Brien stepped back from tour duties to let the captains show off the college’s many features, from the commercial kitchen and trade facilities to computer coding, media, music, dance, career hubs and more.
Having experienced GSSC from the merger that began when they were in Year 8, the students spoke of how the college had come together at Hawdon St and was providing an ever-increasing number of pathway and study options.
“If you are an indication of the kind of people this school is producing, then it’s a great success,” Ms Symes told captains Reyhaneh, Sabri, Bella, Joanna, Madeline and Trinity.
Insisting the students call her Jaclyn, the Attorney-General and Minister for Emergency Services spoke of her own journey in education and politics, which has also seen her serve in the portfolios of Resources, Agriculture and Regional Development.
“I was the first in my family to finish high school, let alone university,” she told the captains.
“My advice to you is to find good mentors in life and always have a go when opportunities come your way.”
Ms Symes said GSSC was the equal or superior to any school she had seen – public or private.
