Performing Arts

Life is busy in the world of Performing Arts as we prepare for the Star Night. Students will be showcasing their skills by acting, singing, playing and dancing their way through the most important story of all time!

The Prep students have sung the classic nursery rhyme, ‘I’m a Little Teapot.’ In looking at the lyrics, we talked about how the teapot became so angry and steamed up that he shouted in anger!

This led to brainstorming a list of emotions, from confusion to excitement. Great thinking Preps. Then, we used a simple instruction, ‘Open the door’ using different emotions. Wow, I was so surprised by the level of expression used by students!

Year One students showed their understanding of dynamics in music by singing and following the movements for the song, ‘Little Sally Moore.’ When they sing the lyrics, ‘Turn to the East’ they sing Piano (soft) and when they sing, ‘Turn to the West’ they sing Forte (loud). It was a lot of fun!

After the song, we discussed the matching emotions which match the lyrics. Perhaps you would say an instruction quietly if you were shy or upset.

If you said an instruction with a loud voice, you would be excited or angry.

We will be exploring conveying emotions in drama this week.

The Year 3 students have worked well to complete their Time Signature activities, and I’m impressed with their work. Singing, listening and dancing to various songs has certainly helped students recognise the different number of beats.

The Year 4 students have been focused on reading music with the help of chroma note colours. I am so impressed with the students’ efforts. I love hearing them sing the solfege notes from middle C to high C!

The Year 5 students have studied the Blues genre in music and learnt the chord progression to play the classic 12 Bar Blues. The chroma note colours help them to identify the groups of notes and I look forward to seeing them compose their own lyrics for their own blues tune in the coming weeks.

The Year 6 students have studied the concept of Syncopation (off beats) in music by singing to African songs such as, ‘Funga Alafia’ a Nigerian folk song and ‘Toombah Ee Lero’ a fun echo song.

Students then put their understanding of off beats to the test by dancing to the American Folk song, ‘Alabama Gal.’ They formed two lines facing each other and carried out a series of partner movements. It was good to see the students getting involved and singing the song.
