Year 7/8 Girls Shine at Prestigious Victorian Invitational Tournament
Our Year 7/8 girls’ soccer team delivered an outstanding performance at the most prestigious Victorian Invitational Tournament, hosted at the Home of the Matildas. Competing against elite specialist programs and high-performance schools from across the state, our girls displayed courage, skill, and a level of football far beyond their years.
Western Heights advanced through the group stage with confidence, controlling matches with a beautiful possession-based style that impressed coaches, spectators, and tournament staff alike. Their attacking flair and composure on the ball made them one of the standout teams of the competition. Sarafina Fiala and Isabelle Petsas controlled the midfield and dictated the play like professional players. Matilda Arbanas organised the defence with Summer Wright, Satarah Martin and Brooke Macfarlane. The forward line was super strong with Lily Whiteman up front, Penny Macfarlane and Meg Grootveld. Our ever reliable keepers Maja Wydro and Indy Cornish were only scored past in the semi final.
In a tightly contested semi-final, the girls were edged out by powerhouse Maribyrnong College, bringing their remarkable run to an end. While the result didn’t fall our way, the team certainly won something just as meaningful: The admiration of everyone watching. Their exciting brand of football—creative, fearless, and dynamic—left a lasting impression and showcased the bright future of girls’ football at Western Heights College.
This performance has reinforced the strength of our Specialist Soccer Program and the dedication of our players. To perform so well without Croatian International Evie Stosic, Evie Mahon and Hannah Wader, the girls need to be proud. The future is exceptionally bright, and we are incredibly proud of how our girls represented Western Heights College with skill, humility, and passion.
