As we approach the end of the school year, our Year 9 students are preparing for their upcoming exams. This is an excellent time to encourage good study habits at home — setting up a quiet study space, creating a revision timetable, taking regular breaks, and maintaining healthy sleep routines can make a big difference in student wellbeing and performance.

Our Year 8 students are also entering an exciting time as they begin the application process for the 2026 Middle School Leadership roles. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and confidence as they prepare to step into leadership positions next year. Our Middle School Captain candidates will be beginning the process by presenting a speech to the Years 6 – 8 cohorts this week. The process will then continue into interviews, with the final announcement at our end of year assembly.

We also have some exciting pastoral days planned to celebrate the end of the year and give students the opportunity to spend quality time together as a cohort. These days are designed to strengthen friendships, reflect on the year’s achievements, and finish the term on a positive note. Please keep an eye out for upcoming communication regarding these days.

What Kind of Person Do We Want Our Students to Become?

At Oakleigh Grammar, we often ask ourselves: What kind of person do we want our students to be? Is it enough for them to excel academically? Why do we value sport, service learning, and initiatives like Round Square?

These questions go to the heart of what makes our school an IB World School. Oakleigh Grammar is one of around 150 International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools in Australia, a global community connected by a shared educational framework and a common purpose: to develop young people who are knowledgeable, caring, and open-minded citizens of the world.

The IB calls this vision the Learner Profile. It describes ten key attributes that guide teaching, learning, and everyday life across all IB schools. Together, they represent the kind of people we aim to nurture: individuals who are not only academically capable but also thoughtful, principled, and compassionate.

IB learners strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-Takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

These attributes help our students see learning as more than a pathway to exams or careers. They remind us that education is about developing character, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others.

Why It Matters at Oakleigh Grammar

Every element of our program, academic rigor, co-curricular opportunities, sports, arts, and service learning, connects back to these ten attributes. When students volunteer in the community, compete with integrity on the field, or collaborate on projects across subjects, they are living the IB Learner Profile in action.

At Oakleigh Grammar, we believe education should prepare students not just for the world, but to make a difference in it. The IB Learner Profile helps us do exactly that.
