Inter-Generational Exchange: Migration Stories
Students in Years 6, 7 and 8 have been working on a unique digital storytelling project titled Inter-Generational Exchange: Migration Stories – Adding to Australian Cultural Heritage. The project invited students to connect with grandparents and family elders to record and transform their migration experiences into meaningful multimedia presentations. Through this process, students explored how technology can preserve identity, culture, and belonging across generations.
In the early stages, students brainstormed reasons why people migrate, created colourful A3 mind maps, and discussed visual ways to represent movement and change. They then planned storyboards in their visual diaries, sketching scenes that traced family journeys from their countries of origin to life in Australia.
Using digital tools such as Canva and PowerPoint, students combined audio, images, maps, and text to create their final presentations. The project not only developed design and collaboration skills but also deepened students’ empathy and appreciation for their families’ resilience. By turning oral histories into digital narratives, our young storytellers are helping to celebrate and preserve the diverse threads that shape Australia’s rich cultural heritage.
