The 28th of October, known as “OHI Day” (meaning “No Day”), holds profound importance for Greeks everywhere. It marks Greece’s brave rejection of fascist forces during World War II, a moment that symbolises courage, sacrifice, and the unyielding fight for freedom. Each year, Greek communities around the world honour this day with parades, ceremonies, and heartfelt tributes, celebrating the spirit of resilience and independence that continues to define Hellenism.

In Australia, OHI Day also serves as a time to remember both Greek and Australian soldiers who stood together in defence of liberty. The alliance between Greece and Australia during World War II was crucial, as Australian forces supported Greece’s resistance against the Axis powers following the country’s courageous “No.” This shared struggle forged strong bonds of friendship, mutual respect, and a lasting commitment to freedom between the two nations.

At Oakleigh Grammar, students proudly joined in commemorations to pay their respects to those who fought and sacrificed for peace and independence.

The first event took place on Sunday, 26 October, when selected SRC members attended a special Doxology at the Holy Monastery Axion Estin in Northcote, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. This solemn occasion was organised by the Australian Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Association.

On Tuesday, 28 October, selected students attended the Divine Liturgy and Doxology at St Eustathios Church in South Melbourne. Afterwards, they participated in two significant wreath-laying ceremonies one at the Australian Hellenic Memorial and another one at the Shrine of Remembrance, organised by the Hellenic RSL Sub-Branch. Representing Oakleigh Grammar, Middle School Captains Chrisanthy Psaras and Paul Makris laid wreaths on behalf of the school community at both memorials.

That same day, selected Year 7 students, accompanied by Mr Panagopoulos, attended the Divine Liturgy and Doxology at our local parish of Sts Anargiri, taking part in another meaningful act of remembrance.

Students felt honoured to be involved in such significant events, paying tribute to all those who bravely fought and gave their lives for freedom.

The commemorations concluded with a special Junior and Middle School Assembly, which beautifully captured the essence of OHI Day. Through moving recitations, musical performances, and vibrant traditional dances, students expressed their pride and gratitude for their heritage. The heartfelt songs and poems celebrated courage, unity, and the enduring Greek spirit, reminding everyone of the strength and sacrifice of those who came before us.

Congratulations to all the talented students who took part in this year’s OHI Day assembly. Their passion, respect, and dedication brought honour to our community and helped keep the story of OHI Day alive for future generations.
