Year 6

Year 6 Learning Update

Reading

Students have been diving into the Industrial Revolution, exploring how this period shaped the modern world. They’ve been practising how to use evidence from the text to support their responses and engaging in lively turn-and-talk discussions to deepen their understanding.

Writing

In Writing, we’ve focused on building stronger, more sophisticated sentences. Students have been exploring subordinating conjunctions, appositives, and relative clauses, all the tools that help make their writing more precise and engaging.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been working with Cartesian planes and performing transformations. We’ve now moved into exploring mass and capacity, converting metric units, and finding equivalence to solve real-world problems. Our next focus will be Chance, where students will conduct repeated experiments and represent probability as fractions, percentages, and decimals.

STEM Incursion

We were lucky to take part in an exciting STEM incursion, where students worked collaboratively to solve hands-on engineering and design challenges. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to apply critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork in a fun, interactive setting. Students were also fascinated to hear from James, a project geologist from the Costerville Gold Mine.

Wellbeing and Transition

Our Year 6 Leadership Day was a highlight of the term. Guest speaker Anthony Stevens spoke about leadership, resilience, responsibility, culture, and respect. Students created beautiful graduation artwork, took part in team-building activities, and enjoyed a day full of laughter and connection outside the usual classroom environment.

We’ve also begun our high school transition program with a day with local schools, giving students a chance to network and meet future classmates as they prepare for this exciting next chapter. They learned how to tie a tie, networked and shared hopes and worries about high school, then broke into groups with a representative from each high school to answer key questions. It was a lovely day and I was proud of how students conducted themselves.

Don’t forget our Year 6 Market is next week, Thursday 20th November. I can’t wait to see all the goodies students sell to raise money for Funfields!!
