Auslan Report

Welcome to Auslan 2026 at Melton West Primary School! Within the first couple of weeks students will revise previously learnt content in their first lesson and Grade Preps will have their introductory lesson. Foundation students will learn about the Auslan language and how it is a way for Deaf people to communicate. They will also learn about how the method of communicating is to use their hands. Learning activities will consist of watching videos and discussing what they understood about Auslan. The criteria for success will be if students can recognise (see and know) the signs “good” and “hello”, sign (do) “good” and “hello” and use their left or right hand.
Grade 1 students will revise the alphabet and greetings they had learnt in their foundation year. They will practise correctly signing each letter, fingerspelling their name and greeting using Auslan. The learning activity will involve playing a ‘Hide the Alphabet’ game where students look for a letter and place them in the correct sequence, including using Auslan to sign each letter.
Grades 2-6 students will focus on the topic ‘What I Did on the Holidays’. This will involve learning Auslan signs related to some holiday activities they may have experienced. The learning activities will support practicing signs related to holidays, asking questions about their friends’ holiday and responding to questions about their own holiday activities. They will also fingerspell names of movies they may have seen, or places they have been to. Students will learn the following Auslan signs in this lesson:
- holiday
- movie
- enjoy
- drive with family
- sleep over
- fun,
- Holiday me what?
- Movie name what?
- aeroplane
- camping.
Keep updated on learning Auslan each fortnight in our Partners in Learning Newsletter during Term 1.
