Community Wellness

As we begin a new school year, creating a strong sense of safety and belonging for every learner is more important than ever. Times of transition such as starting a new year level, adjusting to new routines or moving into unfamiliar environments are a natural part of growing up. While some students approach change with excitement, others may feel uncertain or anxious. Research shows that these periods can be challenging and may affect wellbeing, learning and friendships, highlighting the importance of students feeling secure and supported at school.

Feeling safe emotionally, socially and physically helps students build confidence and engage more positively with change. The ability to manage new situations is closely linked to resilience, which develops over time through consistent guidance, clear boundaries and support from caring adults. When schools and families work together with open communication and shared understanding, students are more likely to feel connected, capable and confident during times of change.

Following our Classroom Mastery routines has shown an excellent start to our term. Classroom Mastery is an approach to teaching that supports calm, respectful and well-organised classrooms. When learners understand what is expected of them and feel supported, they are more focused, confident and ready to learn. Our teachers have ensured these routines and expectations are consistent across the school. You may see this through ‘line up’ signs and expectations, or hear it through our agreed universal cue to start, ‘5, 4, 3, 2 AND... 1’.

As part of our commitment to supporting our learners through new beginnings, we encourage families to watch the School TV resource video, which explores how change can impact young people and offers practical strategies to build resilience and emotional security. By normalising these experiences and providing reassurance and structure, we can help students feel safe as they navigate transitions and embrace the opportunities that come with a new school year.
