Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure

Parents and carers are reminded that the Fremantle Traffic Bridge is now closed for up to 12 months to enable completion of the new traffic bridge for Fremantle. This closure is expected to significantly impact traffic flow, especially along Stirling Highway and Canning Highway, which remain key routes for many in our College community.

To help manage congestion and keep traffic moving during this time, the Western Australian Government and Transperth have introduced a suite of measures from the start of the 2026 school year. These include additional weekday Fremantle Line train services in both the morning and afternoon peak periods, additional bus services in the Fremantle area, and route and timetable changes to a number of services, including routes 107, 160, 998 and 999, to reflect the changed road network.

A free‑travel zone is operating along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station for the duration of the bridge closure, with passengers required to tag on and off within the zone using a SmartRider or contactless payment method to travel free. An additional 100 parking bays are available at Fremantle Station, with registered SmartRider users who are catching the train or a fare‑paying bus service eligible for free parking during the bridge closure period. Road users can continue to access up‑to‑date traffic information, alerts and travel times through the Live Traffic WA mobile app.

Families are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options, such as using public transport, carpooling, or active transport (walking and riding) for all or part of the journey, to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours. Journey planning tools, including the Transperth JourneyPlanner and app (with live bus tracking), have been updated to reflect the service changes associated with the bridge closure.

Key facts and support measures

  • The Fremantle Traffic Bridge is closed from 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months to allow construction of the new bridge.

  • Around 24,000 vehicles that previously used the bridge each day now need to find alternative routes, which is increasing traffic on the Stirling Bridge and surrounding roads.

  • To keep Stirling Highway moving, additional peak‑time train and bus services, a free‑travel zone along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station, and expanded free parking at Fremantle Station for SmartRider users are in place for the duration of the closure.

  • Routes 107, 160, 998 and 999, along with a number of Fremantle‑area services, are operating with revised routes and timetables; families using these services are encouraged to check the latest details before travelling.

  • Main Roads has modified key intersections and installed technology to provide enhanced monitoring of traffic movements, supported by incident response teams stationed along Stirling Highway.

  • Drivers can access real‑time alerts on traffic conditions and congestion in the Fremantle area via the Live Traffic WA app, while public transport users can plan and track their journeys in real time via the Transperth app and JourneyPlanner.

  • Families are encouraged to make use of these enhanced public transport options and planning tools to ease congestion and support safer, more efficient travel during the bridge closure period.
