Year 4 - Literacy

Literacy in Year 4
Throughout Term 3, Year 4 students have started learning about the roles and structure of Reciprocal Reading groups. Reciprocal Reading is a structured, interactive strategy where small groups of students take turns leading a conversation about a text, focusing on comprehension. It involves four key roles: predictor, clarifier, questioner and summariser, each with specific tasks to complete to enhance the group's understanding of the text. These focus groups have been taking place during our 'guided reading' groups.
We have also been practising our research skills by posing questions, utilising the text features of non-fiction texts, taking notes, summarising, and paraphrasing information that we have learnt into our own words.
This term in Writing, the Year 4 students have been exploring Information Reports. We have been focusing on using technical vocabulary specific to the topic. We have also been learning to distinguish between the language of fact versus opinion. Each class researched a topic of their choosing, took notes from a variety of sources and paraphrased their notes to create an information report in their own words.
Please see the examples of our work here:
4LC Information Report about Peru
4A Information Report about Fossils
4H Information Report about Ancient Rome
4AH Information Report about Otzi the Iceman
Each fortnight, we are lucky enough to visit our Foundation Buddies to synergise and work together. This week, to prepare for Book Week, we read our buddies a book that they chose. Then we helped them write a sentence about why they liked the story and drew a picture from the book. We really enjoyed helping our buddies to practise their reading and writing skills.
