Indigenous Education

NAIDOC Week

This week we celebrated NAIDOC Week! The theme for NAIDOC week is 'The Next Generation, Strength, Vision and Legacy'. To start off the week, we held a reflection to discuss the importance of NAIDOC week and learning about our First Nations Peoples.

Bird and Flower Craft

We have been focusing on looking at the wildlife that we have at St Joe's. One thing that we notice a lot is the different birds that come and live at our school. Each class looked and learned about different birds and created these wonderful art pieces using paper. These beautiful birds and flowers are being displayed in our main building. Come and have a look at our wonderful creations!

Incursion

On Thursday, we had an incursion from 'Didgeridoo Australia', we were shown and learned different Indigenous words for names of animals. We also learned some Indigenous songs and actions. The students loved hearing the Didgeridoo being played and seeing a Boomerang fly through the sky!

Laurie- "I liked how he showed us hunting Boomerangs. I liked how he showed us the other Boomerang that can be thrown. He threw it for us".

Mason- "I liked listening to the Didgeridoo and watching the boomerang."

Lexie- "I liked it when the man played the Didgeridoo. I liked the noises and he made an eagle and crow sound!"

Coco- "I liked how he played the Didgeridoo and we got to guess the animal sounds!".

Check out Facebook for some videos from the session.

Dreamtime Stories

In Literature lessons this week, the Foundation students retold the Dreamtime Stories of Tiddalick the Frog and How the Echidna got their spikes! They did an amazing job at remembering all the parts of the story, but also the message in the story as well! They made their own echidnas using playdough and matchsticks.

Walk-a-thon

This week, we have been doing a Walk-a-thon to raise money for Opening the Doors Foundation, which supports First Nations resources to attend school and education. It has been so wonderful to see the amount of effort our students at St Joes display in raising money and running/walking these laps in the cold frost!! A big thank you to those who have donated already. There is still time! Please finalise your donations before Monday.

Here is a link to the online donation page; https://opening-the-doors-foundation-together-we-walk-2025.raiselysite.com/t/st-josephs-yarra-junction-primary-school alternatively cash donations will be collected at the office.

Thankyou Mr Foley for organising the Walk-a-thon Course for us!
