News from Year Three

NAIDOC Week In Year 3
This week, we’ve been celebrating NAIDOC Week in Year 3! On Monday, we read the beautiful Dreamtime story How the Birds Got Their Colours, which sparked some wonderful discussions. Students then explored Indigenous bird species native to the Yarra Valley and wrapped up the lesson by creating collaborative art pieces of their chosen local bird, bringing colour and creativity to our classroom while deepening their connection to Country.
PBL – Online Safety
During our wellbeing lesson, our wonderful Year 3 students developed and created our digital citizenship pledge. As part of our learning, we discussed what it means to be safe, respectful, and responsible when using technology, both in the classroom and at home. Students shared ideas about how to use devices mindfully, communicate kindly online, and protect their personal information. Together, we turned these important values into a shared pledge that reflects our class commitment to being thoughtful and responsible digital citizens. We’re so proud of the students for their teamwork, insight, and leadership in this space!
Maths – Angles
This week, we’ve taken a quick but exciting dive into the world of angles! Year 3 students have been learning to identify right angles and exploring the parts of an angle, including the rays, vertex, and the angle itself.
Using shapes and everyday objects around the classroom, students practised spotting angles in the real world. They also began to compare angle sizes, deciding whether an angle is greater than, less than, or equal to a right angle. It’s been a great introduction to using angles as a way to measure turn and shape.
English – Our Spelling
While continuing to review our learning of the target suffixes ‘-ful’ and ‘-less’, this week we introduced a new suffix: ‘-ness’. Students explored how adding these suffixes changes a word’s meaning, and they’ve been practising identifying, spelling, and using them in their own writing.
