News from college counsellors Br Roger Vallance FMS,

Ms Marijke Keller and Sacha Donaldson RN

It's an exeat weekend with a pupil-free day today, 15 August. The exeat is a time for all of us to take a deep breath and re-energise, steady ourselves for the next full-on run to the end of Term 3. Exams, assessments and lots of activities mean that this term can be pretty intense for most students and families.

There is an excellent opportunity for parents and carers to update their knowledge of mental health and how to promote the mental health of their young people. These programs are run by a unit of the University of New South Wales which is highly regarded. The programs are offered at multiple times and are free.

Who are they for?

  • Parents and carers of teens.

What will they learn?

  • Understand mental health in adolescence, and gain insights from the Future Proofing Study.
  •  What mental health is and when to be concerned.
  • Key strategies to support adolescents.
  • About having the conversation – what to say and how to create a supportive environment.
  • How to seek help from health professionals, as well as online and digital support for parents and adolescents.
  • How to promote healthy habits around sleep and screen use and how to build connections.

Another source of helpful webinars comes from Generation Next.

Associate Professor Mike Nagel, a renowned expert in child and adolescent development, will join the next webinar this month. If you’ve ever wondered why teens behave the way they do – or how to respond without losing your cool – this webinar is for you. A/Prof Nagel will unpack the real, research-backed traits of the teenage brain, and contrast them with the dramatic (and often inaccurate) stereotypes we see in the media. He will provide practical strategies for supporting with empathy and structure. This will be one of those sessions you’ll be talking about afterward. To register for the webinar click here

Updating parental information: what is found in vapes

The narrative about vapes continues to evolve as authorities still struggle to enforce new laws about drug and illicit tobacco sales. We offer a recent article from The Australian, which you can read below.

Another gentle reminder about the recent rise in cases of influenza.

We'll leave it to Queensland Health to keep you updated and entertained.

Biggest take away point is – please STAY HOME if you're unwell.
