IN THE GARDEN
Thank you to the Bowey family for the donation of our new wheelbarrow. It has been working hard with tree planting day/week.
Bird issues
The ravens have been causing havoc in our vegetable garden by pulling plants out and the plant signs. We have covered some garden beds and hung some metallic strips that will hopefully distract them. We are slowly planting some spring seedlings and will cover/net those garden beds when they are planted out.
Worms
Our two worm farms are doing well and are producing a lot of worm wee for our garden. They enjoy coffee grounds and egg shells if you have any to spare.
IN THE KITCHEN
We started the term with cooking 'funny food'... dishes that have a comical name...
Bubble and Squeak, Drunken noodles and Squashed Flies (all delicious!) Can you guess why they are called squashed flies? Check out the recipe!
We are now looking at the Science of Taste. Last week we discussed how some whole foods are naturally sweet (honey, fruit, dates etc) and how much refined sugar is added to processed foods. Our dishes included naturally sweet ingredients, often found in Greek cuisine.
This week we looked at sour foods and how Persian dishes often have ingredients that have pops of a sour taste. Our rice pilau recipe ran into difficulty when the chief 'sour' ingredient to be added as a garnish was not available anywhere! Pomegranates are not in season. Beetroot Borani, a dip is traditionally served on a platter of fresh vegetables and herbs, a bit of a sour taste when paired with parsley or mint! The accompanying pita bread was a hit!
