Year 2 Students Learn the Power of Empathy and Cooperation in the Playground

This week, our Year 2 students engaged in a special lesson focused on empathy and cooperation—two essential ingredients for creating a safe and inclusive playground environment.

A Playground for Everyone

Through this engaging lesson, students explored what it truly means to share the playground with kindness and understanding. The goal was to help children see the playground not just as a place to play, but as a space where everyone should feel welcome, included, and heard.

Learning Through Empathy

Guided by their teacher, students explored how to recognise and respond to the feelings and perspectives of others. They were then encouraged to think about how their choices impact their peers and how cooperation can help solve conflicts positively and respectfully.

What Are We Learning?

As part of this lesson, students aimed to:

  • Understand the meaning of cooperation.
  • Discuss why working together peacefully is important.
  • Recognise that cooperating means thinking about others’ feelings, not just our own.

These conversations are not only helping to build social and emotional learning skills, but also nurturing a more compassionate and inclusive school community.

What You Can Do at Home

You can support this learning at home by having conversations with your child about what empathy looks like in everyday situations—whether it’s taking turns with a sibling, resolving a disagreement with a friend, or thinking about how someone else might be feeling. Simple questions like, “How do you think they felt?” or “What could you do next time to help someone feel included?” go a long way in building empathy.

Thank you for working with us in supporting the emotional and social growth of our students. Together, we are helping children learn not just how to play—but how to play using their heart. ♡
