Creating Futures Together

Tier 2 Words

Tier 2 words are word types that are seen in multiple subjects and can have different contextual meanings behind them. They are crucial for academic success and understanding complex texts or problems over several different subjects.

Throughout this term at Wheelers Hill Secondary College we have endeavoured to focus on these words in multiple subject areas.

Parents are encouraged to support students by enquiring about how they are going with their understanding of their Tier 2 words that should be in their notes/word journal.

Words include:

contrast, depth, focus, perspective, process, network, connect, secure

Book Review Competition

This year to promote reading we have included a Book Review Competition where students are to write a 150-200 word book review about a book they have recently read.

The book review should include:

  • the setting of the book

  • general plot (don’t spoil the ending!)

  • characters involved and themes

  • Don’t forget to have your opinion about the book - did you like the book? Why? Would you recommend the book to others?

All entries can be submitted to the library or to Mr Yong via email at:

brian.yong@education.vic.gov.au

Now would be a great time for parents to encourage students to read and try out a review for a chance to win a prize!

Entries close 1 September 2025. Winners to be announced shortly after

Book Cover Art Competition

Students are encouraged to design their own book cover from a book they have read. Art entries can be in physical or digital form.  Prizes to be awarded to the top 3 entries.

All entries can be submitted to the library or to Mr Yong via email at:

brian.yong@education.vic.gov.au

Entries close 5 September 2025. Winners to be announced shortly after.
