Junior Maths

We are incredibly proud of the way our teachers use responsive teaching and data to shape meaningful learning experiences for our students at St. Joseph's. This term, Year 1 data revealed some students found identifying numbers on a blank number line challenging. Although this concept is not formally introduced in the Year 1 curriculum, the Year 1 team recognised it as an important skill for building number sense.
Rather than waiting for it to appear in future years, the team quickly embedded number line activities into their lessons, ensuring students were supported at their exact point of need. Even better, these lessons have been designed to be hands-on, interactive, and engaging, giving students the chance to physically move along number lines and discuss their thinking with peers.
We are so proud of the way our Year 1 students have embraced this learning with enthusiasm and persistence. Their willingness to take on a challenge, and growing confidence in maths is a credit to both their own hard work and the commitment of their teachers.
